How to descale a coffee maker (and why it matters)
Mineral scale slows your brewer and dulls the taste of your coffee. Here's a simple routine to keep it running like new.
By the Blue Grove team · 5 min readWhy scale builds up
Tap water carries dissolved minerals, mostly calcium and magnesium. Every time water is heated, a little of that mineral content is left behind as a chalky layer inside the reservoir, heating element and lines. The harder your water, the faster it builds.
Signs it's time to descale
Brewing takes longer than it used to, the machine sounds louder, coffee tastes flat or bitter, or you can see white crust around the water tank. Most manufacturers suggest descaling every one to three months, depending on your water.
How to descale, step by step
- Empty the carafe and remove any filter or used grounds.
- Dissolve the descaler in warm water as directed on the package, and fill the reservoir.
- Run a brew cycle halfway, switch off for about 30 minutes to let it work, then finish the cycle.
- Discard the solution and run two or three cycles of clean water to rinse.

Always check your manual
Some machines have a dedicated descale mode or specific instructions. When in doubt, follow the manufacturer's guidance for your model.
