Non-nano vs. nano zinc oxide: what makers should know

Two labels, one mineral. Here is what "non-nano" and "uncoated" actually mean, and how to pick the right powder for your project.

What zinc oxide is

Zinc oxide is a white mineral powder made from zinc. It shows up in a surprising number of places: ceramic glazes, paints, rubber, diaper creams, mineral sunscreens and countless handmade products. Makers like it because it is opaque, gentle and very stable.

What "nano" and "non-nano" mean

The difference is particle size. Nano zinc oxide is milled so fine that its particles measure under 100 nanometers. That is why it can look nearly clear when blended into a cream. Non-nano zinc oxide has larger particles, usually well above that threshold, so it stays whiter and more opaque.

Many makers and shoppers prefer non-nano powder because the larger particles are less likely to become airborne as ultra-fine dust, and because they want a simple, traditional ingredient.

Coated vs. uncoated

Some zinc oxide is coated with a thin layer, often silica or a silicone, to help it disperse in oils or to make it less reactive. Uncoated zinc oxide is the plain mineral with nothing added. Uncoated powder gives you the most control, since you decide what goes into your formula.

How to choose

  • Want maximum whiteness or a simple ingredient list? Choose non-nano, uncoated.
  • Working with glazes, paints or crafts? Look for high purity and a consistent fine powder.
  • Making something for skin? Follow a tested recipe and any rules that apply where you sell. Mineral sunscreens are regulated as drugs in the U.S., so do not make SPF claims on homemade products.

Handling tips

Zinc oxide is a fine powder, so scoop gently, avoid breathing in the dust, and consider a simple dust mask when measuring larger amounts. Store it sealed in a cool, dry place.
